Barely visible after crossing over the Shenandoah River is a large outcrop of limestones and dolomites. Positioned impressively along the bank, these rocks show the carving abilities of the river through the non-resistant carbonates.
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

The arrows depict the flow of water.  Notice how, when water hits a bend, it travels circular into the outside bank.  This process causes erosion of the outside bank and deposition on the inside bank.  In this way rivers can meander horizontally through entire valleys.
